What a night!

At 3:50pm on January 20, a water line broke in the Central Heating Plant, leading to a flood in CHP and a total shutdown of domestic water on campus.

While Facilities Management worked in wet and cold conditions to locate the correct shut-off valve and stop the flood until the break could be repaired, our Security team responded to reports of an alleged threat on campus. Thanks to Paul Hipsey for leading our response to the incident, which was resolved safely.

Business as usual on a Friday night...

Water was restored to campus shortly after midnight. Thanks to Ken Beckett, Michael Chiasson, Lorna Campbell, Klaus Ferber, Marty Gibb, Brodie Johnson, Craig MacFarlane, Cherie Michels, Kirt Stewart, and Jeff Taylor for their dedication and hard work. Thanks as well to Roger Bizzotto, a plumber by trade, who took the chance to roll up his sleeves and escape the office for once.

During the incident, we worked closely with University Relations to communicate with the campus community via UBCO TVs, the emergency procedures website, and UBC Alert. Be sure to sign up for UBC Alert if you haven't already! We're also working with the campus community to help prevent and prepare for these types of events in the future. A report will be available in early March for anyone interested.
